Residential Degree in Special Education: Adapted and General Curriculum K-12

Discover how you can make a lasting difference in the life of a child. The B.Ed. in Special Education: Adapted and General Curriculum K–12 is a comprehensive residential licensure program designed to prepare future educators to serve students with a wide range of disabilities across K–12 settings.

This Virginia Department of Education-approved licensure program is aligned with Virginia licensure requirements and includes rigorous coursework in instructional design, behavior management, assessment, and field experiences that culminate in a semester of student teaching.

Graduates, regardless of their state of residency, are required to obtain a Virginia teaching license, which may be transferred to other states through reciprocity agreements, depending on individual state guidelines.

Upon completion of the B.Ed. Special Education – General Curriculum and Adapted program, you will be eligible for the following endorsements from the Virginia Department of Education: “Special education general curriculum K-12” and “Special education adapted curriculum K-12”

Hands-On Experience

Practical experiences are built into the program to help you feel confident and well-prepared by the time you enter the field.

In this program, you will complete 90 hours of practicum experience and 16 weeks of a student teaching placement.

Faculty who teach in the B.Ed. in Special Education: Adapted and General Curriculum K–12 program have decades of combined experience in the field of special education. Our team is composed of dedicated teacher educators who are not only well-versed in research and best practices but also have extensive experience working directly with students with disabilities in K–12 settings.

Areas of faculty expertise include behavior interventions, transition planning for career and technical education, medical disabilities and health supports in the classroom, and curriculum development for students with complex learning needs.

Career Information

Graduates with the B.Ed. in Special Education who gain state licensure will be eligible to teach individuals with exceptionalities in kindergarten through 12th Grade. Graduates pursue a range of positions in the field of special education including public, private, Christian, and international settings. With a B.Ed. and an initial license in Special Education: Adapted and General Curriculum, graduates are able to pursue additional endorsements in special education, including early childhood special education, transition specialist, and adaptive special education.

Jobs in Special Education

  • Special Education Teacher: Work directly with students with significant disabilities who are working on an adaptive curriculum in K-12 settings, designing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to each student’s unique needs.
  • Inclusion Specialist: Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure that students with significant disabilities who are working on an adaptive curriculum are included and supported in mainstream classrooms.
  • Behavior Intervention Specialist: Develop and apply strategies to address challenging behaviors, helping students succeed academically and socially.
  • Curriculum Developer: Design adaptive learning materials and programs that meet the diverse needs of students in special education.
