Internship Program – International Student Information
International students have the opportunity to complete internships through Liberty University as a way to obtain legal working status in the United States of America. This opportunity is available to all international students although some stipulations apply. International students can complete either a BUSI 499 or BUSI 299 internship to legally receive compensation from an employer.
BUSI 499 Internship
The BUSI 499 internship is for all students (international and domestic) who want to do an internship for credit through Liberty University. You must pay your required tuition rates, and the internship will appear on your transcripts as an actual class. You will also have some assignments associated with this class.
Prerequisites include:
- Junior or Senior Status
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Declared Major
Register for BUSI 499
- Find job/internship (resources include: Handshake, professors, or the Career Center)
- Meet with the International Student Office to schedule an appointment with an International Student Advisor
- Sign up for the course with the School of Business to receive the Student Internship Agreement (SIA) form. Please contact the School of Business Internship Program via email (businessintern@liberty.edu) to schedule an appointment
- SIA form must be signed by the International Student Office and CASAS
- Once the SIA is approved, apply for an I20 (work authorization) through the International Student Office
BUSI 299 Internship
The BUSI 299 internship is designed for international students who do not want to register their internship but are receiving compensation. It is a way to work legally in the USA, and tuition rates do not apply because the class will not be registered.
Register for BUSI 299
- Find job/internship (resources include: Handshake, professors, or the Career Center)
- Meet with the International Student Office to schedule an appointment with an International Student Advisor
- Sign up for the course with CASAS to receive the Student Internship Agreement (SIA) form. Please contact CASAS (casas@liberty.edu) to schedule an appointment
- Get SIA form signed by the International Student Office and CASAS. Once the SIA is approved, apply for the I20 (work authorization)
Additional Information
- Students can only work 20 hours a week for the Spring and Fall semesters (Summer/Winter breaks can exceed 20 hours)
- A CPT needs to be completed for paid internships, after having gone through 2 semesters
- No paperwork is needed for unpaid internships
- Must have internship related to major or subject to denial
