Creative Upcycling Contest

Contest Information

In honor of October’s National Book Month, the Jerry Falwell Library invites you to enter the First Annual Creative Upcycling Contest: Art Made from Books. Showcase your talent and imagination by creating a unique piece of art made (almost) completely from old books. A panel of highly qualified judges from the fields of art, architecture, and design will select winners in several categories. All currently enrolled Liberty University students as well as faculty and staff are invited to enter the contest. However, only currently enrolled students are eligible to win prizes.

  • Most Original (Creative Use of Media; Application of Formal Design Properties; Unique Design Solution)
    PRIZE: $100 Visa Gift Card
  • Most Functional (Creative Functional Design and Use of Media)
    PRIZE: $50 Visa Gift Card
  • Most Intricate (Creative Design that Focuses on Intricate Attention to Detail; Creative Use of Media)
    PRIZE: $50 Visa Gift Card
  • Most Liberty School Spirit (Creative Design that Highlights the Mission and Purpose of Liberty University; Creative Use of Media)
    PRIZE: $50 Visa Gift Card

*Entries can only win in one category.

Rules:

  1. Entrants are limited to one entry. No team entries.
  2. Entrants are required to document their progress and submit the entry form and documentation in a binder with their entry. Documentation must include the concept, process, and finished product via photographs and/or drawings.
  3. At least 75% of the finished product must be composed of book(s)/book pages (at discretion of judges); entrants must include a detailed materials list.
  4. Library staff and judges are not responsible for theft of or damage to entries.
  5. All entries must be in compliance with the Liberty Way.
  6. Beginning August 18, students may acquire designated books from the library (while supplies last). For access to these resources contact the Customer Service Desk between the hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students may also provide their own books.

Deadline:

All entries must be accompanied by a binder which includes the entry form, materials checklist, and process documentation. Entries must be delivered to the Jerry Falwell Library Customer Service Center by 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1. Online students may mail their entries to Jerry Falwell Library, 1971 University Blvd, MSC Box 710170, Lynchburg, VA 24515. All mailed submissions must be received by Oct. 1. Anyone wishing to have their entry back will need to pick it up between Oct. 18-24. Online students wishing to have their work returned will need to pay return postage and must indicate their desire to have the work returned on the entry form. At their discretion, the library staff has the right to dispose of or retain any unclaimed works.

Judging:

Judging will take place Oct. 2-5, and winners will be announced on Oct. 6. Winners will be contacted via email, and will be announced on the library’s Web page and social media. Top entries will be on display in the library from Oct. 6-17. The decision of the judges is final.
