Experience
Mr. Josh Detwiler currently serves as the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands and the Drumline Director at Liberty University. Prior, he served as a Director for Brookville Middle School (2016-2024) and Liberty Christian Academy (2014-2016). He is an experienced music educator, conductor, clinician and composer/arranger, and his performing ensembles have consistently received Superior ratings at District Assessments and multiple VMEA Blue Ribbon Awards during his tenure. His marching ensembles consistently win best in class, and swept every caption of every contest in the 2023 season, winning 4 straight Grand Champion trophies. His competitive percussion sections are consistently undefeated. He also has a large catalogue of professional sound design, marching drill, and music composition for marching ensembles across central Virginia, and is an accomplished audio engineer. He maintains memberships with PASIC, VMEA, and NAfME.
Mr. Detwiler is a 2013 alumnus of Liberty University, where he studied Music Education and participated in the Pep Band, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Indoor Drumline and Marching Band, serving as an officer and section leader. He was also the principal percussionist for the Liberty University Wind Symphony in multiple tours, performing in Maine, Chicago, St. Louis, Orlando, Atlanta, and everywhere in between. He is a sought after clinician and honor band conductor, known for his relatability to students, impressive rehearsal pacing, and excellent results.
He has also served for 10 years as a counselor and site director of Camp Hydaway, He loves student ministry and is an active volunteer, coach, musician and youth leader in the middle and high school ministry at Thomas Road Baptist Church.
Mr. Detwiler lives in Forest, Virginia with his wife Sydney, and his four children, Cory, Parker, Emery, and Layla. He is a fairly laid back Clemson Football fan (by marriage), and loves playing with his kids, disc golf, skateboarding, videogames, and dogs (not cats).
