Experience
Daniel J. Schmid is Associate Vice of Legal Affairs with Liberty Counsel, an international nonprofit, litigation, education, and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the family. With offices in Florida, Virginia, and Washington D.C., Liberty Counsel has hundreds of advocates across the nation.
While in law school, Professor Schmid was the Managing Editor of the Law Review and a member of the National American Bar Association Moot Court Team. Professor Schmid also received the Roger C. Bern Planning Award for his excellence in business and transaction work, and the Distinguished Service Award for his work managing the law review’s publications.
Professor Schmid is a constitutional litigator specializing primarily in First Amendment law. Professor Schmid has also been Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law at Liberty University School of Law for many years, where he has taught First Amendment law, appellate advocacy, legal writing, lawyering skills courses, bar preparation courses, the Constitutional Litigation Clinic, and also the Supreme Court and Appellate Clinic.
Professor Schmid has been a federal litigator since 2012, and he has litigated many critical First Amendment issues. Professor Schmid has represented clients at all levels of federal and state courts, including the United States Supreme Court. Professor Schmid’s practice has resulted in hundreds of reported decisions across the country and includes three reported decisions from the United States Supreme Court. See Shurtleff v. City of Boston, 596 U.S. 243 (2022); Harvest Rock Church v. Newsom, 141 S. Ct. 1289 (2021); Harvest Rock Church v. Newsom, 141 S. Ct. 889 (2020). Professor Schmid’s amicus work was also cited by the Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, 597 U.S. 215 (2022), as one of the bases for overturning Roe v. Wade. Professor Schmid has argued numerous times before federal circuit courts of appeal across the country and has tried many cases before federal judges and juries; he has particular expertise in representing clients in appeals involving federal constitutional issues.
