Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Student Chapter

Liberty University Chapter

The Council for Exceptional Children is an international organization dedicated to improving the educational success of children with disabilities and/or gifts. The Student Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) at Liberty was formed early in Spring 2005. Its purpose is to provide fellow students with exposure to disability related topics through professional development activities, facilitate opportunities to serve the community of students with disabilities, create opportunities for future teachers to collaborate with local special education professionals and leaders of disability ministries, and glorify God in all they think, say, and do (Psalm 19:14).

In January 2006, Liberty’s chapter of CEC and Thomas Road Baptist Church joined resources to create iKids, a disability ministry to serve children and families with special needs. Through various events, CEC partners with iKids to come alongside families within the community and provide sweet opportunities for them to experience rest and quality time together. Events include a Halloween party, Breakfast with Santa, Easter egg hunt, and respite nights. Mission Statement
Membership and Roles
CSER and Honor Cord

Our mission is to serve the community of students with disabilities through meaningful collaboration with local disability ministries and special education professionals. We aim to empower future educators by providing exposure to disability-related topics and offering comprehensive professional development activities. In all our efforts, we are dedicated to glorifying God in our thoughts, words, and actions.

There are no specific requirements for membership in Liberty’s chapter of CEC. If you wish to join the national chapter, more information can be found at exceptionalchildren.org.

Current leadership roles in the club include president, secretary, social media manager, community/iKids outreach coordinator, and hospitality team. These roles are appointed as the faculty sponsor sees fit. If you are interested in club leadership, attend meetings regularly and express your interest.

CEC is approved as a CSER opportunity, and attending events CEC puts on (such as speaker nights and iKids community events). Speak to a club officer if you are interested in registering for CSER. If you wish to receive an honor cord at graduation, you will need to log 40 hours of service. Professional development points are also available for education majors and can be earned through event attendance.
