Career Readiness

Career readiness is the foundation students need to demonstrate the core competencies that prepare them for workplace success and lifelong career growth. It represents the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities that today’s employers expect—and has become the new currency in launching a meaningful and successful career.

Why Career Readiness Matters

For new college graduates, career readiness is key to entering the workforce with confidence. It equips our graduates with the tools to navigate their first professional roles and positions them for long‑term success in an ever‑changing job market.

Career readiness provides a valuable framework for shaping career‑focused learning outcomes across academic programs and co‑curricular experiences. No matter a student’s major, these competencies help connect classroom learning with real‑world application.

For employers, career readiness offers a clear way to identify talent with the skills needed to succeed across a wide range of roles. It also serves as a guide for shaping internships, apprenticeships, and other experiential learning opportunities that support students’ professional development.

Career Readiness Programs

Career Readiness programs equip students, faculty, and staff with the skills, resources, and support needed to foster meaningful career development across campus. From helping student workers strengthen essential workplace competencies through Pathway to Professionalism, to empowering educators and staff to champion career growth through Career Champions, these initiatives work together to ensure every student is prepared to thrive beyond college—confident, capable, and competitive in today’s workforce.

Career Readiness Competencies

Every year the National Association of Colleges and Employers sends its Employer members a survey asking for the top skills/competencies that they need to see in graduating students in order for those students to be successful as new hires. These become the eight Career Readiness Competencies, and are essential in helping close the skills gap for today’s college educated workforce. They provide a clear framework for the knowledge, behaviors, and abilities that students and early‑career professionals need to thrive in the workplace. Competency assessments offer a reliable and validated way to measure proficiency in these critical areas among students, job candidates, interns, and new hires. This data‑driven approach delivers actionable feedback and personalized development plans that help individuals grow with intention and purpose by establishing a shared competency language. Here at Liberty University, many of our employers also look for an appreciate the nineth competency that we add “Biblical Worldview.”

Assessments help educators, employers, and learners communicate competency expectations more effectively. They also support informed decision‑making in hiring, talent development, and program improvement. Competency data contributes to the creation of benchmarks that promote consistent preparation and recruitment practices. This ensures that all candidates—regardless of background—have access to clear standards and meaningful opportunities for career success.
