The Tapestry of Our Lives

Mustard Seed Chronicles: Story Time with LU Grandma

If you look at the back of a woven tapestry or a beautifully sewn cross-stitch picture, you will see a mess. Threads are hanging and no apparent design is visible. But by viewing it at its front, there is beauty and order.

So, it is with our lives! God has designed your life and mine beautifully. He is the Master Weaver and Designer. He looks at it from the front. We look up and see the back. The black threads from the back look troubling and chaotic, but from the front, they outline the most beautiful parts, so that the beauty stands out.

What does our character have to do with the image of a tapestry? We will all experience trials and tests of faith in this life (those black threads in the tapestry). How we deal with those trials and tests reveals our character (the pictures outlined by the threads). Do we become derailed by self-pity? Do we get angry and curse the situation and curse God? Or do we embrace the trial to grow in our faith and trust God in them knowing that He knows best and that He is the only One that knows the outcome before we do?

Sickness, economic hardships, crime, and relationship issues are prevalent in our society (those black threads again). Some of the hardships we may have brought on ourselves, and some are caused by others. When we search God’s Word and look at the lives of the disciples, we have not much to complain about.

I am speaking here from a lot of years of experience. Trials have never been fun! However, through the trials, I embraced them as a way for God to hone my character and make me thankful. In the trials, I could bring glory to Him and turn my whining into praising (the beautiful pictures of my tapestry). May your life’s tapestry be full of praise for God and His glory!

Prayer:

Father, You created the Garden in sinless perfection…we let sin enter it and life on earth has never been the same since. If we follow Your Word and truly hide it in our hearts, we can count on it for the joy we need in all circumstances. And we can look forward to the reward You have promised in James 1:12, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” Oh, that we would all look at our life’s circumstances through that lens and be thankful for them so that we can someday look at our life’s tapestry from Your vantage point. Help us, Father!

We beg of you in Jesus’ name, Amen!
