I’m Not Your GPS!

Mustard Seed Chronicles: Story Time with LU Grandma

Where are we going?

Do you know the way?

Where’s the map?

How long will it take?

Where will we eat along the way?

These are all questions our children, spouses, or we have asked before taking a trip. A GPS is a great way to find those things, that is, if you have one.

I have met with many students over my years at LU who were struggling to figure out God’s will for their lives and were looking to me to help them figure that out.

I would always ask them, “Have you really gotten with God to ask Him?” Sadly, most had not.

When they did though, God would give them the direction they sought by changing their heart first.

There was one young man I met with who was seeking that very answer. I recommended that he ask God. It was Friday afternoon. He came back to me on Monday, and I asked him how it went. I will never forget what he said.

“Miss Timi, I did not get on my face before the Lord like you told me. I just sat in a chair. I started pleading with the Lord to show me what I was going to be and how I was supposed to get there. You know what He said? It was like He got in my face and said, ‘Son, I am NOT your GPS! You want to know your end destination, every route, turn, and how long it will take to get there. Why don’t you just shut up, get in the car, because I’m driving!’”

After I laughed, I really got thinking about what he said. I am not at all sure that the Lord would have really used that language, but who knows. The point though was well-taken. Sometimes, the Lord does show us early what the plan is. Sometimes, like in my life, He reveals the plan in small segments asking me to walk by faith one step at a time holding His hand.

Whichever way He is leading you, stay close, and He will never lead you down a wrong road.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we can be so impatient sometimes. We ask that You guide us one step at a time on the road You choose for us. We know there may be potholes (challenges to the plan) and construction (others who need help) causing what we see as detours to our plans, but they really are not meant to keep us from allowing You to finish what You start in our life. I hear myself asking, “Are we there yet?” And, Your patient grace tells me, “Not until heaven, Child, just keep walking.”

May it be so for our parents and students. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus,

Amen.
