God’s Timing Is Everything

Mustard Seed Chronicles: Story Time with LU Grandma

I have known about God’s timing being perfect ever since I became a Christian back in the 1970s, but He showed me again in 2021. Because of my husband’s cancer in January, he had many doctor appointments every day for weeks. However, the treatments were over for the week, from March 8-12, and he had only one on Monday morning. God’s timing!

Our oldest son Lance had been in the hospital and had undergone some surgeries. He had not been able to talk because of the ventilator, but on Sunday evening, he called, and we had such a wonderful talk about the Lord and His goodness. He called his Dad and spoke with him and his 2 brothers too. On Saturday the 6th, we got a call from our daughter-in-law that our son was getting ready to go be with Jesus after 50 + years of living in a medically dysfunctional body. Because of Covid, we had not been allowed to see him in the hospital. We got to go and say goodbye to him because it was a weekend day. That day he went to be with Jesus. God’s Timing!

Lance had a way of bringing family together! My PA son was in between jobs for the week so it was no issue for him and his family to come. My NY son was in a time at his work when he could come too! On Monday evening (never knowing what would happen in the future) when the family was mostly all together, we had a campfire in our backyard, and each spoke of Lance’s contributions to their lives. God’s Timing!

On Tuesday morning my husband had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. We found out that he had two very serious health conditions and they needed him to stay in the hospital for four days. If I had had to face these things alone, it would have been so very difficult. I praise God that my other children and their families were either here. The boys could not come to see him except by phone, which was so very sad. So, they were here to make the week much more tolerable for me and they had children who had never met each other because of years of different schedules. God’s Timing!

One evening when the family was all together here at the house, we set up the iPad and the children, our sons, and their wives got a chance to see Grampa, and he see them. Precious. We are a singing family, so we all sang “Amazing Grace” and Grampa’s favorite, “The Old Rugged Cross” together. He was so touched as were we all. Thank You, Lord, for technology and Your timing!

With my husband’s new condition, there are some very different dietary changes that we have to make, and I did not have any training in that kind of food preparation. I found out that My Assistant Director’s daughter did have the training and was willing to help me! I got help from a couple of cookbooks that I had. I did not have to buy a food processor/blender because I already had that. One of my sons bought a vacuum seal machine and bags for me to use. God’s timing!

I must admit learning this new way of preparing food was so new I had to start rearranging my kitchen to make it more usable for this kind of thing. I was getting frustrated with trying to figure out what changes over that Friday when he came home. However, in the height of my frustration, the Lord brought to my mind Colossians 3:15 which says “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your heart. For you are called to live in peace and always be thankful.” I honestly cannot tell you how many students, friends, family members and co-workers that I have shared this verse with when they seemed harried, frazzled, and frustrated. Now I had to take that verse and again make it very real in my own life for this new journey. I also remembered Pastor Terry Frost’s admonition to me SO many years ago, “Timi, what if this is your new normal? You cannot look at the future by trying to bring in the past. It just does not work!” I found my frustration and fears melted away like melting butter!

We already have all the peace that Jesus can give us. And the fact that He gave it to us because of the cross and resurrection is God’s timing too! I talked about that before in other Chronicles, but God made this so very real to me again that night, and I pray this helps with any you are experiencing right now.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You, are so gracious and merciful! I praise You that our son is with you in Heaven because of Your sacrifice on behalf of us and we will all be together again soon unless You tarry. Until then, thank You for getting us all through these tough days. I know we are not the only ones at LU who are dealing with grief and serious family illness, and You are here with us every moment of every day!

We love You, LORD, and praise You for all these things in Your wonderful name, Jesus.
Amen!
