Understanding Mental Health Concerns in Our Military

Join the Behavioral Sciences community on March 24, 2026 to engage in discussion about the mental health field as it relates to the military population.

Curriculum throughout the expo will be taken from the book, Unseen Warrior: A Military Cultural Guide for Mental Health Professionals. Continued education credits will be provided through this event.

All students, staff, and faculty are asked to register for this free event. Both in-person and online options are available. The registration deadline is Wednesday, March 18th, 2026.

Unseen Warrior: A Military Cultural Guide Expo

Event and Parking Notes:

  • Find the Montview Ballroom on the Campus Map
  • Attendees may park as permitted by their LU parking decal
  • Recommended location is the Main Campus Parking Garage adjacent to the Softball field and Divinity Tower. Parking passes are not required. Attendees should not park in any numbered parking spot in the garage. Please exit the garage from the 2nd or third floor and head to the Montview Student Union.
  • Handicap Parking is available outside of DeMoss.
  • Overflow parking is available in the Runk & Pratt Garage. Attendees should not park in any numbered or R1-labeled parking spots. From this garage, take the elevator to the ground floor and proceed through the tunnel to the main campus. The tunnel will let out in front of the Vines Center. Take a right turn out of the tunnel towards DeMˆoss Hall and enter the 1st floor entrance underneath the grand staircase in front of the DeMoss 3-pillar fountain. Once inside, walk through DeMoss to the Montview Student Union and locate the twin glass elevators. Take the elevators to the third floor and the check-in will be on the left-hand side.
  • Check-In will be held outside the Alumni Ballroom. Attendees may come up to the 3rd floor via the glass elevators in the Montview Student Union.

Meet the Panel

Dr. Charles W. Hoge, M.D., COL, USA (Ret.)

Dr. Hoge is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College (BA) and University of Maryland School of Medicine (MD). He received board certification in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and psychiatry, and served 20 years active duty in the U.S. Public Health Service (1989-1991) and U.S. Army (1991-2009). Dr. Hoge directed the Army’s premiere research program on the mental health and neurological effects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2001-2009. He deployed to Iraq in 2004 and Afghanistan (as a civilian) in 2011.

Dr. Hoge has testified to Congress on several occasions, given a Tedx talk, wrote a self-help book for combat veterans titled, “Once a Warrior—Always a Warrior: Navigating the Transition from Combat to Home“, and authored or co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. His articles on PTSD and mild traumatic brain injury are some of the most cited medical articles from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He continues to work as a psychiatrist treating service members, veterans, and family members in the Washington D.C. area.


Jessica is a graduate of Frostburg State University (B.A. in Social Work) and Texas A&M University-San Antonio (M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy). She is pursuing her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Regent University. Jessica served in the United States Marine Corps as an active-duty officer (2011 to 2016) and as a reserve officer (2016 to the present). During her service, she supported multiple training exercises, including theater security cooperation events in the Philippines. She performed key billets as the Deployment Readiness Coordinator for 3D Assault Amphibian Battalion (2019-2021) and the Family Readiness Officer for 1st Civil Affairs Group (2020-2024).

Currently, Jessica teaches master-level clinical courses at various universities and supervises Ukrainian clinicians working with the Ukrainian military. Her research is focused on the cognitive effects of military training and war trauma on service members, veterans, and clinicians. Jessica also continues to provide trauma-informed care through her telehealth practice, Breakthrough Therapy Texas, serving veterans and military families.

Jessica Behne, M.A., LMFT, (USMC)

Sam Zasadny, USMC, USN-R

Sam is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (BS), George Washington University (MIPP), and Wheaton College (MA). He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree at Wheaton College, IL with anticipated graduation in 2027. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps (2007-2023) as an officer, helicopter pilot, aviation specialist, and weapons school instructor. He deployed as a pilot to Afghanistan in 2011, Japan in 2013, and with a Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2015.

Sam transitioned into the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps (2023-present) upon acceptance into the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) for Clinical Psychology, preparing for active-duty service as a U.S. Navy Psychologist. His clinical experience includes work in community mental health, private practice, and military contexts.

Department of Social Work

All participants must attend both the morning and afternoon sessions to be awarded CEU credit. Participants will be sent two quizzes, one for each session (morning and afternoon). Participants must score an 80% or higher for both quizzes; these quizzes may be retaken if needed.

* Please note: Students who are in their field placements must get approval from their Agency Task Supervisor to count this event towards training hours (students will document these hours in CORE so that the supervisors can approve them there).
