LU Alert Notification Guide
The LU Alert notifications are designed to make the community aware of crimes, safety concerns, and emergency situations. These alerts are sent out whenever the criteria are met.
Public Service Notification
This alert is a campus notification that the LU community must know about but is not an emergency.
Timely Warning
This type of alert is given when a Clery-related crime has occurred within the Liberty University Clery Geography. Clery crimes and geography are established using the guidelines from the Office of Clery Act Oversight.
Emergency Notification
An emergency notification is chosen when an active/emergent threat to the campus presents itself. This requires criteria that are located at the Emergency Communications Dispatch Center.
At Liberty University, we believe that a strong, informed, and connected community is essential for creating a safe and welcoming environment. Our Community Engagement Division actively participates in events throughout the year to promote recruitment and reinforce the University’s commitment to safety. These events include but are not limited to safety fairs, career expos, preparedness workshops and local outreach initiatives. By fostering partnerships and educating the community, the team ensures that Liberty remains a secure and connected environment for students, faculty and staff.

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design
Liberty University is committed to creating a secure and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. One of the key strategies that we employ is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). This is a proactive approach that uses thoughtful design and planning to reduce the opportunities for crime and promote safety across campus and within our community partnerships.
What is CPTED?
CPTED is based on the principle that the physical environment can influence behavior. By designing spaces that are open, well-lit, and easily monitored, we deter criminal activity and foster a sense of security. Our Community Engagement Division works closely with campus departments and local agencies to implement CPTED strategies that make a measurable difference.
CPTED initiative include but are not limited to:
- Lighting Assessments: Ensuring pathways, parking lots, and building entrances are well-lit to enhance visibility and reduce hiding spots.
- Natural Surveillance: Designing landscapes and structures that allow clear lines of sight, making it easier for people to observe their surroundings.
- Access Control: Strategically placing barriers, signage, and entry points to guide movement and limit unauthorized access.
- Maintenance and Upkeep: Keeping campus areas clean and well-maintained to signal active oversight and discourage vandalism or neglect.
- Partnerships with Local Agencies: Extended CPTED principles to community organizations and businesses that collaborate with Liberty University (student worker utilization), ensures safety beyond campus borders.
Liberty University’s Community Engagement Division implements Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design strategies across campus and in partnership with local agencies. These initiatives, such as improving lighting, natural surveillance, access control, and regular maintenance, help created safer spaces for students, faculty, and staff. Through CPTED, Liberty University demonstrates its commitment to proactive safety and community well-being.
