Opportunity
There are several opportunities to serve at our church! Here is a list of several of those opportunities:
-Teacher/Assistant for children’s Sunday School class (Sunday mornings, 9:45-10:45am) – we have two children’s Sunday School classes, Bible Searchers (1st-3rd) and Bible Learners (4th-5th), as well as a Youth class (7th-12th). The student would be responsible for either preparing and teaching the class (we currently use Answers in Genesis curriculum they would use), or assisting the teacher in the class
-Nursery (9:45-10:45am, 11:00am-12:00pm) – the student would serve on a rotational basis in the nursery with another person. they would be responsible for watching/interacting with the babies and toddlers during this time, changing diapers if needed, and clean up the room after Sunday School or Sunday morning worship
-Sunday night Youth (5:30-7:30pm) – this is a little more free range of what could be done (with approval from the pastor). It has been used for fun events to build more relationships (bowling, Christmas party, Winter Jam, etc.), as well as nights for teaching. What is taught is flexible, doesn’t follow a set curriculum like Sunday morning, unless it would help the student with more structure (which the pastor is more than willing to help with), with the desire to help the students grow more in their relationship with Christ and with one another
-AWANA (Sunday evenings, 5:30-7:30pm) – we have several roles in AWANA students could serve in, and three different age groups (Puggles – 3 year old-K, Sparks – 1st-3rd, TnT – 4th-6th). There is game master, which would lead games for the three different groups on a rotation. There is snacks, helping with the adult volunteers in preparing and serving a meal we feed the kids every Sunday evening. There is teacher/helper in teaching lessons from the book, helping kids with reciting their verses, etc.
-Preaching for Sunday evening service (6:30-7:30pm), teaching a devotional for Wednesday night prayer meeting (7:00-8:00pm) – This would be a wonderful opportunity for Pastoral Leadership students. Providing an opportunity for them to sharpen their preaching/teaching skills. For Sunday evening service, we typically open in prayer, sing a hymn, and then have a sermon (30-45 mins). The pastor would want to work with the student to provide helpful feedback after the message, just like in the PLED preaching class to help them grow more in their calling. For Wednesday evening prayer meeting, the typical flow is have an opening prayer, sing a hymn, hear a devotional from the Word (15-30 mins), and then have a time of prayer. During the devotional a legal pad is passed around for people to write prayer requests, and then after the devotional, read out each prayer request and see if anyone feels led to take that prayer request, and then go around the sanctuary, each person who volunteered to pray for a request praying, and the pastor (or whoever leads the prayer meeting) closes out in prayer and dismisses. The person who helps with Wednesday night prayer meeting would either simply teach the devotional, or lead the entire meeting. Provides another opportunity for PLED students (maybe in conjunction with their Pastor Duties class) to garner more experience.
-Youth Director (part-time, paid) – our church is currently looking for a Youth Director for our church of youth (currently approximately 5-15). This is added in this group of opportunities, because for those that are either working towards a student ministry degree, or feel led to student ministry, and desire to serve as a volunteer with our youth could lead to the possibility of this position, which is part-time and paid, and would work with the Senior Pastor for discipleship, etc.
-there are other events outside of these regular activities that would provide students service hours opportunities, such as our AWANA Grand Prix, Trunk or Treat, VBS, church clean up days, etc.
If there is any questions about any of these, feel free to contact the Pastor, and check out our Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channel. We’re happy to answer any questions, and desire to be a place students not only serve, but be poured into and discipled, as they make a Kingdom impact in Bedford, Lynchburg, and wherever else the Lord will send them!
