Flames Football hits the field in preparation for FBS debut

The 2018-19 Liberty University Flames Football team suited up for the first time on Saturday, as training camp workouts began in preparation for Liberty’s first season as an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) member. After two days of workouts in helmets only, Liberty held its first practice of the year in half pads on Monday, preparing for the team’s first workout in full pads on Wednesday.

Fans can look forward to red hot competition for the Flames this season, as Liberty has dates with Army (Sept. 8 at West Point, N.Y.), Virginia (Nov. 10 at Charlottesville, Va.) and Auburn (Nov. 17 at Auburn, Ala.) after its season opener at home against Old Dominion (Sept. 1 inside Williams Stadium, kicking off at 6 p.m.). (See the full schedule.) Williams Stadium will unveil the first phase of a major expansion project, which includes a new 6,000-seat upper deck and press box on the east side (upping seating capacity to 25,000), a colonnade entrance and enclosed lawn seating area on the south end, as well as a new 3,000-square-foot high definition  video board.

On Feb. 17, 2017, a waiver granted by the NCAA allowed Liberty’s 45-year-old football program to take the final step toward reaching its goal of competing at the highest level.

This season, Liberty enters the second year of its two-year FBS transition process, competing as an FBS independent program for the first time. Though Liberty was originally not eligible for postseason competition in its inaugural FBS season (due to transition rules), a recent agreement with the AutoNation Cure Bowl gives the Flames a chance at a bowl game appearance this postseason.

After its first week of training camp, Liberty will host Flames Fan Fest on Saturday, Aug. 11, beginning at 5 p.m. at Williams Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public. In addition to game day activities, including tailgate games, inflatables, and concessions, fans can enjoy a team scrimmage (kicking off at 6 p.m.) followed by photo and autograph sessions with the players and coaching staff.

Football season tickets are currently on sale, starting as low as $65.
