Health Care Professional Liability Including LUCOM Faculty and Students

  • Medical malpractice coverage is provided for those acts or omissions arising out of the course of employment or authority by the following:
    • Health care professionals
    • Residents
    • House Staff
    • Health care professional students
  • Per the Virginia Code (Section 8.01-581.15), the medical malpractice cap on July 1, 2008 increased to $2,000,000, and on July 1, 2012 increased to $2,050,000 with annual increases of $50,000 ending with the July 1, 2031 increase to $3,000,000. The July 1, 2031 increase will be the medical malpractice cap, unless new legislation is passed in the future.
  • All medical incidents or potential malpractice claims involving the following must be reported immediately to the Office of Risk Management at (434) 592-3582 (leave a message):
    • School of Nursing
    • School of Counseling
    • College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Coverage is not provided for non-University activities.
  • No coverage is provided to medical facilities under contract with the University.
  • Medical Professional Faculty:
    • Do not need to purchase additional coverage as respects their professional duties with the University as this is already provided
    • Should they work or volunteer for non-University activities, they should consider the purchase of their own coverage, and any subsequent purchase will be at their own expense and not the University

Coaches and Trainers Professional Liability

  • Coaches and Trainers are provided professional liability coverage for those acts or omissions arising out of the course of their employment or authority with Liberty University
  • Certificate of Insurance can be issued should any associations or professional group require evidence of coverage prior to allowing you to participate in an event with Liberty Students, Club Sports Teams or NCAA Athletes
  • Report all incidents or potential claims which involve the following immediately to the Office of Risk Management at (434) 592-3582 (leave a message):
    • Coaching
    • Training
    • Club Sports
    • NCAA related activities

Coaches Camps

  • Coaches who may hold Coaches Camps are strongly advised to seek their own coverage, as follows, for  activities involved in such camps, as the University coverage will not respond to any claims that may develop from them:
    • General Liability
    • Professional Liability
    • Workers Compensation coverage (for any employees)
  • Failure to have the appropriate coverage in place could leave you personally liable for any acts or failures to act by you and/or your staff
  • The University Office of Risk Management is working with the University Risk and Insurance Management Association to develop an online application process for purchasing the required coverage for camps

Law School

  • The University purchases Licensed Professional Liability insurance coverage to protect Law Students and Law School Faculty involved in practicum and non-paid internship for course credit
  • Report all incidents or potential claims arising out of the Law School activities immediately to the Office of Risk Management at (434) 592-3582 (leave a message)

School of Engineering

  • The University purchases Professional Liability insurance coverage to protect engineering students and faculty involved in practicum and non-paid internship for course credit
  • Report all incidents or potential claims arising out of the engineering school activities immediately to the Office of Risk Management at (434) 592-3582 (leave a message)
