Lynchburg City Council voted to approve the designation of 1.5 acres of land at Perrymont Park for stormwater runoff management during the Sept. 9 meeting.
During the public hearing portion of the council meeting, Director of Parks and Recreation Wyatt Woody provided a summary of the recommendation to approve the dedication of 1.556 acres of conserved open space at Perrymont Park for stormwater management purposes.
The item was previously brought up at the Physical Development Committee meeting July 8 and was then passed to the council.
“The improvements of the property will generate surface water runoff, or stormwater, that will need to be managed in accordance with the city code and state law,” Woody said. “Conserved open space is the practice of setting aside via deed restrictions to allow low volumes of runoff to disperse, … and it’s a state approved measure to mitigate stormwater.”
Ward I Councilwoman Jacqueline Timmer made the motion to pass the resolution, which passed unanimously.
Perrymont Park is located at 409 Perrymont Avenue. According to Lynchburg Parks & Recreation, the park is currently undergoing various site improvements that are “partially funded” by grants awarded by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation’s Recreational Trails Program.
Woody said some of those improvements included the construction of a quarter-mile paved trail, a picnic area and a fenced-off leashed dog area.
