Men’s soccer blanks the VMI Keydets, 4-0

The Liberty men’s soccer team dominated Oct. 11 in a 4-0 win over VMI after finishing with four draws in its last six matches.

It didn’t take long for Liberty to get things going, with Marko Mitrevski scoring four minutes into the match to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead.

Soon after, in the 26th minute, Seth Clark followed up his teammate’s goal with one of his own.

Before VMI had a chance to respond, Liberty scored for a third time in the first half, this one coming from Gabe Findley.

Going into the half, the Flames held a comfortable and commanding 3-0 lead.

Leading scorer Luke Eberle then joined the party, scoring in the 57th minute to give his squad a commanding 4-0 lead that sealed the game.

Following the win, Head Coach Kelly Findley was very satisfied with his team’s performance.

“All of our attacking players were making dangerous runs and getting on the ball. Seth Clark, Luke Eberle and Gabe Findley were tremendous,” Findley said. “I thought Onyango came on and really lifted the game, and then Marko Mitrevski does what he always does.”

The Flames’ offense was clicking all game, as it finished with a season-high four goals. Despite hitting the skid prior to the match, Mitrevski could feel they were in for a big night.

“I think it was the mentality from the beginning. We could feel it in the warmups, and we were all buzzing to play,” Mitrevski said. “Everybody was excited to get on the field, and it helped us start so well.”

Following its first win since Sept. 10, Findley emphasized what this game meant for his team.

“It always feels good to get a win, and I’m mostly just happy for the guys,” Findley said.  “They’ve been playing so well and deserved to get results.”

Liberty will return to Osborne Stadium for its final home game Oct. 21 to take on Central Arkansas in the first of three remaining ASUN conference matches.
