Resurrection Life – Tyler Staton
Summary:
Tonight, Pastor Tyler Staton showed us three movements –each one a different part of the mosaic that is the resurrected life. We first move from darkness to light. We are called to live as children of the light — illuminated people — in the community of His people. On our own, we are not enough. When we confess openly to each other, we allow God`s illuminating grace to do its work. We are also called to wake to what is happening around us. There is a cultural current that, unless we swim against it, will lead us to apathy. The natural pull of this current can lull us to sleep spiritually. We need to be active in swimming against it. Finally, we move from flesh to Spirit. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we move from simple theory to personal experience. We go to God with the deepest appetites of our lives. He alone is the living water that will quench the spiritual thirst of the things of this world cannot.
Quotes:
‘When we gather together as the people of God, we often act as if everything is okay, that we`ve got our lives under control and that whatever small or petty sin we may or may not be wrestling with as a matter between each of us and God. But we often forget that the story we`ve been called to embody before the world is not one where we get to be the `good guys.` Jesus was crucified on account of my sins and your sins –past, present and future –and so when we gather there is little reason for pretense. We are the company of the forgiven, and yet when we gather together we often work very hard to give the impression that we are the company of those who `have it together`.’ – Philip Kennesson
‘The greatest threat to your spiritual life is probably not moral failure, but spiritual drowsiness.’ – Tyler Staton
‘The great enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the table of the world. It is not the X-rated video, but the prime-time dribble of triviality we drink in every night. For all the ill that Satan can do, when God describes what keeps us from the banquet table of his love, it is a piece of land, a yoke of oxen, and a wife. The greatest adversary of love to God is not his enemies but his gifts. And the most deadly appetites are not for the poison of evil, but for the simple pleasures of earth.’ – John Piper
‘If we are all sleepwalking together, it looks like we are awake.’ – Tyler Staton
‘Instead of making you less aware of your problems, the Spirit makes you more aware of your resources.’ – Tim Keller
