The weekend of Nov. 3-5 will be a time of gathering, celebration, and swapping fond memories on Liberty Mountain as Homecoming 2023 hosts another reunion of Liberty University’s past, present, and future and an offering of thankfulness to God for all He has done for over 50 years in Lynchburg, Va.
This year marks the largest number of registrants leading up to Homecoming with over 10,000.
The Homecoming Weekend experience begins with check in and registration in the LaHaye Event Space, starting at 9 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Guests can then head to the Vines Center for a special Convocation featuring pastor and author Tony Evans at 10:30 a.m.
On Friday evening, the Liberty alumni community can enjoy games, food trucks, a Ferris wheel, interactive photo booths, and more at the annual Carnival, located at the East Campus Satellite Lot from 5-8 p.m. Friday night’s events also include a Chamber Singers Reunion Concert in the Center for Music and Worship Arts Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. and a bonfire at the East Campus Satellite Lot starting at 8 p.m.
Alumni are invited to begin Saturday by gathering together in the Liberty Mountain Conference Center for an Alumni Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. (registration required), an event that Director of Alumni Engagement Dr. Greg Tilley says will be an opportunity to join with other members of Liberty’s growing base of graduates and form connections with each other and the university for the future.
“I am looking forward to welcoming a record number of alums back home to reconnect, reunite, and plug back into their Liberty family as we once again embrace the original vision that God gave to Dr. Falwell,” Tilley said. “Come experience the feeling of pulling your chair up to the table, rejoining the family to rest, reminisce, and belong.”
Saturday afternoon will build up to a night of Flames Football with a 6 p.m. game against Louisiana Tech in Williams Stadium. After the Homecoming Parade down University Boulevard at 3 p.m., an Alumni Tailgate on the Outdoor Football Practice Field and Flames Fan Fest at the Indoor Football Practice Field will both begin at 3:30 p.m. A football ticket is required to attend either of the tailgate events.
Throughout the days of Homecoming, guests have the opportunity to take tours of Jerry Falwell Library Archives or Chaplains Museum in the lower terrace of the library, the Rawlings Scriptorium Museum in the floor level of the Freedom Tower, or multiple locations around campus through a tour from the Hancock Welcome Center.
The front of DeMoss Hall will serve as the big screen for two projection shows— “Message from our founder” and “Welcome to the Mountain”— throughout the nights of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, alternating each half hour between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Other entertainment opportunities include a home series for Liberty’s DI men’s hockey team against Stony Brook, with games at 7 p.m. on Friday and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and performances of the Department of Theatre Arts’ production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
“For more than 50 years, this campus has been home to all passionate young people who want to make a better world in the name of God,” Student Activities Director Cort Comfort said. “We want all alumni to come together and talk about their Liberty stories, memories, and experiences they had on this campus. Depending on what era they’re from, our alumni experienced very different versions of Liberty, but the heart and dedication to Christ has always been there. With an amazing football team, strong leadership, and a campus filled with passionate Christians, there is no better place to be than Liberty University’s Homecoming Weekend.”
