On Saturday, during Liberty University’s football game at Williams Stadium, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Executive Director Will Driscoll presented Flames Director of Athletics Ian McCaw with the Eddie Webb Achievement Award, recognizing Liberty posting the best overall winning percentage for an NCAA Division I athletics program in the Commonwealth for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Liberty’s most successful athletic season, which saw the Flames and Lady Flames win 70.5 percent of their contests (220-90-7 record) in 2020-21, included 10 conference championships and the 2020 Cure Bowl. This is the first time Liberty has received this honor in the 25 years of the award’s existence.

“God abundantly blessed our athletics program last year,” McCaw said in August. “We are grateful for the tremendous support that we received from (President Jerry) Prevo and our leadership. Our coaches, staff, and student-athletes performed exceptionally and demonstrated perseverance in the face of unique circumstances.”

Since 1972, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum, one of only 16 throughout the nation, has been proud to honor the Commonwealth’s contributions to the world of sports. . Their mission is to honor athletic excellence and serve as a nonprofit educational resource centered on health, math, science, and character development programs, while inspiring visitors through sports history and interactive entertainment. For more information, visit www.vshfm.com.

Last fall, Flames Football defeated a pair of ACC foes in Syracuse and in-state rival Virginia Tech. The two wins made Liberty the first non-Power 5 team to post a pair of wins over Power 5 schools in the same season since Houston in 2015. The Flames finished the season with a 10-1 record, tying the program’s record for wins in a season (Liberty finished the 2008 season with a 10-2 record).

With the Cure Bowl win over its former Big South Conference rival Coastal Carolina, Liberty became the second transitioning team in NCAA history to win consecutive bowl games during its first two full seasons at the FBS level.

Due to the adjustments to most college athletics programs’ schedules because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Liberty’s remaining 19 NCAA Division I athletics programs competed during the 2021 “Super Spring” season.

Staring on January 1, 2021, Liberty Athletics competed in 356 athletics events during the spring semester, capturing 10 conference titles and posting an overall winning percentage of 69.8 percent (196-83-7).

Liberty claimed conference titles in men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, men’s tennis, softball, women’s cross country, women’s outdoor track & field, women’s soccer, and women’s swimming & diving.
