The United Way of Central Virginia made a splash this past weekend with its largest summer event, Hill City Slide.

The 700-foot waterslide encompassed Church Street from Aug. 22-24.

Event Coordinator for the United Way of Central Virginia Tabitha Abbott said because last year’s event was such a hit, they had to bring the slide back for a second year.

“They were really excited about it first year,” Abbott said. “Last year, we completely sold out at this event, so we brought it back for a second annual, and as you can see, it’s packed again.”

She said an event as big as the Hill City Slide requires a lot of planning to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“Usually, when I stop planning the first one, I start planning the second one,” Abbott said. “No joke, I hold the date right away. I start making sure I can get permits for things as soon as I’m able. So, usually about eight months to a year is what it takes.”

The Hill City Slide event brings people from all over Central Virginia into the Lynchburg area. Lynchburg Police Department Officer Elsa Ramirez said events like these create a positive atmosphere in the community and allow her to engage with the youth.

“It’s honestly a wonderful opportunity,” Ramirez said.  “… I am here for two reasons. I am here to support the community and build positive relationships with the community and interact with them in a whole different way than they typically see law enforcement.”
