Campus Runway: Looking Ahead To New (And Old) Trends

With Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week right around the corner, new designs and recycled, updated looks from the past fill the runways.

A new year doesn’t always symbolize the start of a new trend, but it does begin new fashion seasons. This happens with colors, patterns, materials and silhouettes. For example, the popularity of neutral colors in fall 2021 carried over into winter 2022 trends. With the change in weather, wearers traded lighter pieces for warmer ones, but the same color palette remained.

Since the beginning of 2022, designers introduced many new trends to the public.

Minimalist Moments Design

This trend, for those who manifest minimalism into their daily style, can be mistaken for simple neutral colors. Whether a pop of white or a head-to-toe white monochromatic outfit, this trend of pure white offers a fresh, revitalizing moment for the spring and summer. Shows such as Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Valentino, Fendi and more displayed this look on their runways, with pictures posted on Vogue.

Heavily Embellished Design

Embellishment – anything but boring – brings excitement to fashion. Sequins, chainmail or metal mesh, sparkle mesh, crystals, fringe and anything shiny bring this trend to life. This cosmic display of glamour trickled down from the high fashion category and spilled over into the everyday fashion world. In the past, embellishments stayed in the limelight of red carpets, photo shoots and big events. Now, designers are bringing them into everyday fashion. The color palette for these pieces has a wide range that doesn’t stick to a set formula. Shows such as Balenciaga, Burberry, Rodarte, Christian Dior, Michael Kors, Gucci and more have displayed these looks on their runways, according to pictures of runway looks that I browsed on Vogue’s website.

Bring Back the Millennium Design

While Y2K design slowly crept into fashion over 2021, 2022 brings it back in full swing. According to Vogue, baby tees, low-rise jeans, butterfly clips, body chains and fun sunglasses will take the fashion world by storm in 2022. This trend leaves its interpretation up to the wearer. I have seen many interpretations of this trend on social media and various influencers. Shows such as Blumarine, Coach, Zimmermann, Tom Ford, Bottega Ventana, Dolce & Gabbana  and more have displayed these looks on
their runways.

Bright Colors Design

Come the end of spring and beginning of summer, neon and brightly colored clothing will return in style. This trend has resurfaced in the past years and seems to have a heavy seasonal attachment. Vogue catalogued many of these looks on their website. Recent runway shows, including Valentino, Versace, Brandon Maxwell, Gucci and Tom Ford,  paired together bright colors and created color combos that were unexpectedly aesthetic.

Biker Chic Design

The phrase “biker chic” refers to the use of faux leather on different articles of clothing, including leather jackets, blazers, skirts, pants and more. Many designers  have created their own twists on this trend. Leather in different shades and diverse silhouettes were utilized on many runways, but the classic biker jacket was incorporated as well. Leather pieces mixed with denim, embellished with studs and made into a puff sleeve were also popular this season. These looks appeared on runway shows such as   Balenciaga, Acne Studios, Alexander McQueen, Diesel, Miu Miu, Prada and more. I loved seeing the photos of this trend on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.

Of these trends, which are you most excited to see? If you could bring back one trend, what would it be? Tell me on Instagram @austinfarmerie.
