Licensure Program and Location FAQs

Upon application to Liberty University, a student’s state of residence will be determined. This is based on a hierarchy of addresses available to the university through a student’s application, FAFSA, and other forms of information provided to the university. Each student will receive a state of residence based on this information.

Yes. If you move to a different state, or feel Liberty has assigned you an incorrect state location, you can provide your new state location by completing the State Change Notification form. In addition, we suggest that you update your address in your ASIST account.

As of July 1^st, 2024, the U.S. Department of Education requires institutions to ensure that their licensure programs meet all educational requirements for licensure in the state where a student is enrolled through online education. Liberty University maintains strict compliance with all licensure requirements for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Additionally, our licensure programs must also align with state-specific licensure criteria for all states and U.S. territories in order to offer these programs in those states.

All programs Liberty University designs and advertises to lead to licensure are impacted by these requirements. This includes programs across various fields of study, including Education, Nursing, Counseling, Social Work, and more. Students and prospective students can find more information on Liberty’s State Licensure Website.

Your pathway for licensure remains the same as when you entered the program. Some states may require additional educational requirements and/or transcript evaluations to receive licensure. In some instances, your program may not be eligible for licensure as it is not offered in the state in which you will seek licensure and employment. If you have concerns about licensure, please reach out to your appropriate licensure team.

Breaking current enrollment may lead to your inability to continue in your current licensure program. If you decide to resume your academics at a future point, you will need to re-apply. Please review the break in enrollment policy to provide further clarification.

You will be allowed to enroll in a new licensure program if all state requirements are met through your new program for the state in which you reside and receive your education. We encourage you to review the licensure/certification requirements for your state information for the new program that you are interested in pursuing.

If you move to a different state after starting your licensure program, your enrollment will not be affected as long as you maintain enrollment in your program. We encourage you to review licensure/certification requirements for your new state.
