Liberty University students living on campus can make their voices heard on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Lynchburg Ward III-2 voting precinct on campus, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.in the Montview Student Union, Alumni Ballroom.
While Virginia’s regular voter registration deadline was Oct. 23, the state offers same-day voter registration on Election Day. Students who live on campus can register to vote in Virginia through a provisional ballot form and must use their Flames box number as the residence address. Staff from the university’s Registrar’s Office and the local electoral board will facilitate voting at the campus precinct.
A city voting precinct has been open on campus since 2012.
During Convocation on Oct. 23, Chancellor Jonathan Falwell told students that this year’s election carries significant implications for the commonwealth. Three proposed constitutional amendments that, if confirmed, would lift current regulatory restrictions to expand abortion access across Virginia, redefine sex and gender, and grant voting rights for felons who are no longer incarcerated. With about 9,500 living on campus, students’ participation at Liberty’s precinct could play a meaningful role in shaping local and statewide outcomes.
“We don’t tell you which candidate to vote for, but here at Liberty, we want to make sure that all of us understand that those three amendments are critical. They’re vital,” Falwell said.
He added that the amendments are deliberately vague to mislead voters: “As believers, as followers of Christ, we must vote ‘no’ on all three.”
In addition to the proposed constitutional amendments, students voting on campus will select candidates in the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and Lynchburg City Council.
Liberty’s Office of Government & Community Relations will host information tables at the precinct to help students navigate the voting process and will hand out sandwiches on a first-come, first-served basis.
