Liberty University School of Business Professor Kurt Cornfield received the Larry Burkett Award at the 2023 Kingdom Advisors Conference in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 22-24.

The award, presented by Kingdom Advisors, an organization of Christian financial advisors who aim to provide financial advice through a biblical lens, is given to one individual each year who is considered exemplary in their field and who glorifies God through financial planning. It is named after the late Larry Burkett, the founder of Crown Financial Ministries. The award criteria include exhibiting an evangelical faith and fervor, Christian character in its most complete sense, unparalleled professional competency, and integration of biblical wisdom into all of their advice and counsel.

Cornfield, who is certified as both a financial planner and a kingdom advisor, serves as the director of student and emerging advisors for Kingdom Advisors. He has 34 years of experience in the financial advising industry. After beginning his career at Morgan Stanley in 1984, he spent 24 years at Merrill Lynch, retiring in 2018.

“It’s an amazing honor to be in the company of the people who won that award,” Cornfield said, noting that Howard Dayton and Dave Ramsey, two financial advisors he has looked up to, are previous winners. “I’m humbled by it and honored to have the work that we are doing at Liberty be recognized by the Kingdom Advisor community.”

Kingdom Advisors surprised Cornfield with the award at the conference and showed a video of testimonials from students, alumni, and faculty that he has impacted.

Liberty sent 62 financial planning students to the event. The conference provided students from various universities with workshops, large group sessions, and opportunities to network with other financial planning professionals.

“One thing that makes Liberty a cool place is there’s a lot of people like me who are really in a position to give back to these young people who want to enter various industries,” Cornfield said. “I’m really blessed to be at a place like Liberty that lets us do what we’re doing, and we have an amazing platform to reach the world for Christ. We get high-quality students who come to Liberty and all we have to do is get them ready to be the Champions for Christ that our founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell, originally envisioned. The eternal impact of the work that is being done at Liberty will be felt for generations, and I’m grateful to be a small part of it.”

Liberty’s Center for Financial Literacy, part of the School of Business, provides biblically sound financial training for Liberty students, faculty, and staff as well as the community. It also includes valuable free resources to Liberty students such as its peer financial coaching program.
