Liberty University’s student newspaper, the Liberty Champion, has released a special edition that pays tribute to the school’s vibrant 50-year history. The 20-page edition is available online and at multiple locations on campus.
The edition includes stories about Liberty’s trailblazers, timelines of key moments in campus development, Liberty Athletics milestones, testimonies of alumni who overcame tremendous odds, a special message from President Jerry Prevo, and more.
“It has truly been an honor and great privilege to work alongside such an incredibly talented, insightful, and creative group of people to share this story of God’s provision in the life of Liberty University,” said tabloid editor Kacey Martin, who recently graduated with a degree in English. “Working on this special edition has given me a new appreciation for the faith of those who lived through the early days of great uncertainty, of living day-to-day in prayer that God would carry them safely through.”
Staff members have worked on the edition since August 2021, gathering interviews and refining pages during Christmas break and in between the Champion’s regular weekly production schedule.
“Working on this special edition of the Liberty Champion so beautifully coincided with a period of reflection in my own life as I prepare to graduate,” said former Liberty Champion editor-in-chief Jacqueline Hale, an interdisciplinary studies student with focuses in communications, natural sciences, and social sciences. “As I’ve reflected on the last four years, one theme runs through every memory, every friendship, and every experience: God’s faithfulness. What this special edition has helped me realize is that this sweet steadfastness of God is the story He has given to not only me in my time at Liberty but also to thousands and thousands of others who have walked this mountain. It has been an honor to be a small part of sharing that great story.”
The Liberty Champion is the official student newspaper of Liberty University, serving campus and the Lynchburg community by reporting on news, sports, features, and student opinions. The Champion is the largest weekly newspaper in Central Virginia, circulating 13,000 weekly issues in addition to online and digital content.
All newspaper staff members, which include writers, editors, photographers, and graphic designers, are undergraduate students in the communications or related fields. The Champion provides student journalists an opportunity to sharpen their interviewing, writing, and design skills while in college.
