Indoor Track to be named in honor of legendary coach Brant Tolsma

Former Liberty Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field and Cross Country Head Coach Brant Tolsma (center) is accompanied by his successor, Lance Bingham (left), and Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw.

One of the facilities that he helped build toward the end of his historic 34-year career will now bear the name of former Liberty University Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field and Cross Country Head Coach Brant Tolsma.

To honor his commitment and passion to build a nationally recognized track & field program, Liberty will name the track inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track. A ceremony will be planned during the 2021-22 indoor track & field season to publicly recognize Tolsma with this honor.

“The Liberty track and field program has been a hallmark of excellence under the leadership of Coach Tolsma,” Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw said. “His astounding number of conference championships and coach of the year awards is unprecedented and the influence he had on student-athletes is extraordinary. We are grateful for the support of President (Jerry) Prevo and the Board of Trustees to honor Coach Tolsma with the naming of the indoor track in his honor.”

Liberty added the state-of-the-art indoor track facility to its long list of new athletics arenas and fields when it opened in January 2017. The 169,000-square-foot complex stands beneath the illuminated monogram on Liberty Mountain as a testament to the standard of excellence Tolsma established for Liberty’s programs. The track itself is the facility’s most dynamic feature and one of only a handful of indoor tracks in the U.S. to offer a six-lane, 200-meter, hydraulically banked oval.

Tolsma closed out his storied coaching career at Liberty that started in 1986 after the 2020 indoor track & field season. He guided Liberty’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field programs to an astonishing 116 conference championships as well as six NCAA Division I individual national titles.
