Last week, Liberty University’s School of Music a cappella group, Shine, released a music video on the school’s social media pages of the national anthem that was recorded from the floor of the new Liberty Arena last month.
Shine was founded in 2014 by School of Music Dean Dr. Stephen Müller and is a contemporary a cappella group of 13 students who inspire and encourage listeners with their beautiful harmony and powerful lyrics. With unique and fresh vocal arrangements, this team utilizes Christian music, old and new, to present the Gospel.
“They have performed in churches and schools in the Lynchburg area and beyond,” Müller said. “Their highlights have included a trip to New York in 2018, where they sang with other choirs at Carnegie Hall, and they also sang at the historic Calvary Baptist Church in Manhattan and at the renowned Brooklyn Tabernacle.”
While COVID-19 is limiting their number of performances this year, Shine members are still grateful for the chance to be a part of the team.
“It was really exciting for me to be able to audition as a freshman and make the team,” said junior Christian leadership and church ministries student Natalie Falwell. “I’ve been able to grow in my vocal talents by being around so many people who are so vocally gifted. It has stretched me a lot to be working with all these students who are mostly music majors.”
“One of the reasons that I have loved this group so much is because we are given such a unique way to worship together,” said alto singer Katie Munson, who is pursuing graduate degrees in apologetics and music education – performance. “That’s the part I love the most because we are able to share the Gospel through singing together.”
In past years, the talented singing group was comprised of 20-25 vocalists, but this year’s group features 13 (12 singers and a vocal percussionist) who are all on scholarship.
“It was such an honor to be selected to this group,” said Ethan Haglund, a sophomore recording engineering and producing student. “I feel undeserving knowing that out of so many School of Music singers, I was selected to join these amazing people.”
Shine hit the road this past weekend where they ministered at Swift Creek Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va.
