Engineering dean to receive national award for pioneering work in materials engineering

Dr. Mark Horstemeyer, dean of the Liberty University School of Engineering, was selected by ASM International to receive the 2022 Albert Sauveur Achievement Award for his groundbreaking work in materials engineering.

The citation from ASM (formerly known as the American Society for Metals), a professional organization for materials scientists and engineers, said Horstemeyer was selected “For being a pioneer in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) where he has contributed in multiscale materials modeling and simulating the process-structure-property-performance sequence in creating optimized structural components.”

The award was established in 1934 and is named after Belgian-born American scientist Albert Sauveur, who is credited as being one of the founders of physical metallurgy, the science of manufacturing products from metals.

“It is an honor to be recognized by ASM International and to join the list of previous winners who have all made outstanding contributions to materials science and engineering,” said Horstemeyer. “This award provides more opportunities to further the work of ICME and, ultimately, use it for the Lord and His Glory.”

ICME is a relatively new field that links computer modeling to materials development and testing. As one of the first engineers in ICME, Horstemeyer has focused his work on writing computer-based simulation models that show the molecular behavior of materials in a range of environments — starting with an astronomical scale (the cosmos and outer space) and progressing through smaller scales all the way down to the smallest subatomic scale used in electronics. By creating multiscale models, scientists and engineers can find commonalities that exist between the different scales and then link the scales together and show how metals behave in different environments.

Horstemeyer poses with some of the students he taught at the India Institute of Technology.

Horstemeyer, who taught courses on ICME while at Mississippi State University and at the India Institute of Technology (IIT), will begin teaching ICME curriculum at Liberty beginning in Spring 2021, making Liberty one of only 11 universities in the world with this ICME coursework.

“I’m glad to be at Liberty where we are continuing to build the computational framework for ICME,” Horstemeyer said. “This will help us in our work on ‘creationeering,’ a term we have trademarked, to show how science and engineering can combine to create God-focused outcomes that benefit society.”

The Sauveur Achievement Award will be presented at the ASM Awards Dinner scheduled to take place during the organization’s 2022 International Materials Applications & Technologies (IMAT) conference.
