Snowflex slopes remain open to the public for summer fun in the outdoors

The carpeted, misting slopes of Liberty University’s Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre provide students and the surrounding community the ability to enjoy winter sports in all four seasons of the year, and this dedication to offering unique year-round recreation has continued this summer.

The Snowflex Centre allows for winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and sledding in all four seasons.

Operating on its summer hours, Snowflex is remaining open seven days a week and still offers many of its activities, which include skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and sledding on its multi-leveled slope. Sledding was brought back to the list of activities last year after the facility’s beginner’s slope was expanded. The facility is adhering to all federal and state guidelines related to COVID-19.

Liberty students can enjoy the facilities for free with a Flames Pass, and the general public can join in the fun for $8 per hour and, if needed, a $14 day rental fee. A $25 combo pass is also offered, which includes tubing, access to the Snowflex slopes, and ski and snowboard rental equipment for 2 hours.

“From the skiing and snowboarding aspect (at Snowflex), if you live in Lynchburg you have an opportunity that really no one else in North America has,” Acree said. “We offer people the ability to come out at any point in the year and ski or snowboard. Our surface is beginner friendly, but we also have enough features on our hill to appeal to riders who enjoy the freestyle aspect of the sport.”

The rail jam event on July 21 brought more action to the slopes of Snowflex earlier this week.

The slopes have already seen a lot of action this summer. As part of the 2020 Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University, the Snowflex Centre hosted amateur ski & snowboarding rail competitions on July 21 for competitors 14 years old and under and an open class men’s and women’s category. The rail contest consisted of 15-minute jam sessions for each division with judging on overall impression.

During that same week, Liberty’s Club Sports department hosted a three-day youth day camp at the Snowflex Centre. Students in the camp were also given the opportunity to participate in the Commonwealth Games.

Although Acree said that popular events like Family Day have been postponed to next summer, his team is working on developing alternative promotions and special days for the Lynchburg community in the coming months. For Homecoming Weekend this fall, Snowflex is scheduled to host a rail jam event in conjunction with the Homecoming Carnival on Oct. 9.

“At Snowflex, you can enjoy one of the best views in Lynchburg in the outdoors, and it’s a place for all skill levels and ages,” Acree said.
