Dorothy Helms, wife of the late U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, visited Liberty University’s Helms School of Government on Friday, Sept. 24. During her visit, Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. announced that a free-standing building was being planned for the school, as well as a citizenship course that will give students a stronger foundation on U.S. history, government and the Constitution.
The school is named after the senator, who represented North Carolina in the U.S. Senate from 1973 to 2003 and was known for his firm commitment to conservative principles throughout his career.
The three children of Jesse and Dorothy Helms — Charles Helms, Nancy Griggs and Jane Knox — were also present for the announcement, along with Vice Chancellor Ron Godwin and about 40 Helms School students and faculty.
The chancellor thanked Helms for her visit and for her husband’s service to the country.
Godwin recounted some of his memorable visits with Senator Helms, who had overcome many political obstacles — from media battles to re-election campaigns — throughout his distinguished career.
After remarks, students were given the opportunity to visit and take photos with Dorothy Helms.
