What kinds of grants does Fulbright offer?
Fulbright offers multiple kinds of grants. At Liberty University, applicants typically apply for Fulbright U.S. Student program and Fulbright U.S. Scholar program.
The Fulbright Student program consists of the Study/Research Grant and the English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Grant. You are encouraged to apply to the Study/Research Grant if you are seeking to conduct research or study abroad at the graduate level. You are also encouraged to apply to the Fulbright ETA grant if you are seeking to engage in a highly rewarding cultural exchange opportunity while teaching English to students from primary school all the way to higher education for 20-30 hours a week.
The Fulbright Scholar program is available to college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others. The Fulbright Scholar program offers approximately 470 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries.
All grants provide round-trip transportation, book and research allowances, maintenance for the academic year based on living costs in the host country, supplemental health and accident coverage, tuition (in some cases), and language or orientation courses where appropriate.
How and when do I apply for Fulbright?
At Liberty, students seeking to apply to the Fulbright Student program are encouraged to contact the Fulbright Program Advisor, Professor Edna Udobong, from their sophomore year of college.
Nonetheless, students can apply to the Fulbright Student Program as an enrolled undergraduate/graduate student or within five years of graduation. Applying through Liberty gives you the advantage of the having your application undergo a campus committee support and interview review process.
For the Fulbright Scholar Program, applicants must apply be U.S. faculty, administrator or professional willing to conduct research abroad for a year in an academic or professional field.
What is the “ideal” candidate like?
The ideal Fulbright candidate is: intelligent, interested in others, involved, determined, and can show all of these qualities in their writing.
What is the difference between a Fulbright Student and a Fulbright Scholar?
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers undergraduate and graduate students, and young professionals within five years of graduation to conduct research and study or teach English abroad in a country of choice.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers American faculty members, administrators and professionals who seek to lecture or conduct research abroad for up to a year.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible. There is no age limit on the Fulbright U.S. Student Program award. The official GPA requirement is a 3.0. Anyone who has resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the national application deadline is ineligible to apply.
Graduating Students
- Currently enrolled at Liberty University and will hold a bachelor or dual degree by the time of the grant
- Meets Fulbright country requirements
- Fulbright provides stipends and travel allowances to spouses and dependents
Alumni
- Will not have a Ph.D. degree on the application deadline of Oct. 13
- Meets Fulbright country requirements
- Graduate students may qualify for other awards, if graduation from Liberty University has been more than 3-5 years (preferably)
- Liberty University Fulbright Campus Evaluation Committee will review applications in Aug. and Sept.
I am a dual citizen of the U.S. and another country. Am I still eligible to apply?
Yes. However, it may not be feasible for dual nationals of the following country to apply the countries due to host country law or policy:
- Australia
- South Korea
- Norway
- Japan
- Denmark
- Ukraine
- Germany
- Belgium
- Spain
- Russia
- Netherlands
- New Zealand
- Iceland
- Colombia
- Taiwan
- Slovenia
How many applications can I submit in a year?
You can only submit one application each application cycle. However, unsuccessful applicants can always reapply in subsequent years.
How many countries can I apply to in an application cycle?
You can only select one country and tailor your application to that country during an application cycle. In selecting a country, consider identifying one that will be the best fit for you as long as you ensure you meet the country’s language requirements and that your interests and abilities match the country’s needs. You are encouraged to consult the country statistics tool on the Fulbright website when narrowing down your country choices. However, that should not be your only reason for selecting a country.
How competitive is the Fulbright Scholarship?
The acceptance rate for the Fulbright Scholarships is 20%, although this varies by a few percentage points year by year. Nonetheless, being a Fulbright recipient should not be thought of as an out-of-reach goal.
