For Chris Gardner (’94), a Business Finance graduate, a successful career has been built on leadership, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence. Gardner was recently inducted as the 33rd member of the MetLife Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding contributions after 21 years with MetLife and 31 years in the employee benefits marketplace.

Looking back on his time at Liberty, Gardner says the friendships he formed remain some of his most treasured memories. As an active member of Student Government, he also recalls spending countless days and evenings at David’s Place, building relationships that have lasted well beyond graduation.

Gardner credits Liberty’s professors with helping prepare him for success in the business world. Their genuine investment in students and commitment to equipping graduates for their careers provided a strong foundation that has served him throughout his professional journey.

His faith has also remained a guiding force since graduating. Reflecting on God’s faithfulness, Gardner shares that God has placed mentors in every season of his life and has been present through both the successes and challenges of his career. Those experiences have continually reminded him to never give up and to keep persevering.

When asked what advice he would give current students and soon-to-be graduates, Gardner encourages them to embrace opportunities without fearing failure. He recommends pursuing internships, intentionally building professional networks, and seeking mentors who will challenge and inspire growth. He also suggests creating a personal “board of directors” made of trusted individuals who can provide wisdom, encouragement, and accountability throughout life and career. Finally, Gardner encourages fellow alumni to give back to Liberty, not only through financial support but by investing their time as mentors for the next generation.
