Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center hosted the first in a weekly series of prayer meetings outside the Montview Student Union on Wednesday, Oct. 12, to pray for the soul of America leading up to Election Day, Nov. 8. The gatherings will be held at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 19, Oct. 26, Nov. 2, and Nov. 9. The center also launched a “22 Days of Prayer for Liberty” initiative on Oct 10. Students were handed day-by-day prayer guides that encourage them to pray through critical issues facing America.

“All the problems that we’re seeing in our country right now are biblical issues,” said Liberty student and prayer organizer Emily Huseman. “I hope this fosters a habit of prayer in students, faculty, and staff, that the first thing they think of is prayer when they wonder what to do. … I hope they take the prayer guides, pray on their own, and also remember to unite with other believers and pray. … I hope this encourages Christians to be in tune with what’s going on in our country, but also know that there is hope, and that is through prayer.”

Each week, the prayer meetings will focus on a specific theme, including prayers for the judicial system, biblical values, the global Church, elections, and Liberty University as a whole.

The Freedom Center is setting up microphones and banners on the Montview footsteps, and participants will have the opportunity to pray in groups or publicly using a microphone.

“When we pray, we are acknowledging that we are not in control, but God’s in control,” said Dr. Tim Yonts, Freedom Center contributor. “We get to vote and voice our opinion, but ultimately, the Lord is the one in control, and He directs the affairs of our country.”

Liberty’s founder, the late Dr. Jerry Falwell, often fervently promoted, “Nothing of significance happens apart from prayer.”

“I wasn’t here when Dr. Falwell was alive, but I’ve been really impacted by his legacy and his intent with building this university, and seeing the Moral Majority that he started has been really encouraging,” Huseman said. “I hope that we can take his passion and vision for that and encourage the student body today to continue what he started and be alert about what’s going on in our nation and to be very purposeful and prayerful.”
