Lady Flames named ASUN Women’s Basketball Tournament co-champions

Lady Flames Women’s Basketball players celebrate in overtime of their March 11 ASUN Championship semifinal win at North Alabama.

The ASUN Conference has designated Liberty University’s women’s basketball team and top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University co-champions of the 2020 ASUN Women’s Basketball Championship. The title game set for March 15 in Fort Myers, Fla., a rematch of last season’s final, was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, the Lady Flames’ duo of redshirt junior guard/forward Emily Lytle and freshman guard Asia Todd was selected to the ASUN Championship All-Tournament Team.

No. 3 seed Liberty (20-11) qualified for its second straight ASUN Championship final with a 91-86 quarterfinal victory over No. 6 seed Kennesaw State on March 7, and a 90-87 overtime triumph at No. 2 seed North Alabama in the March 11 semifinals.

Lytle, who led all ASUN players with 51 points in the tournament, scored a career-high 29 points against Kennesaw State before converting the go-ahead three-point play in overtime against North Florida. Todd became the first Lady Flames freshman since 2010 to net back-to-back 20-point contests. Lytle and Todd shot a combined 12-for-18 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range in the tournament.

The Lady Flames’ first ASUN Championship crown since joining the conference in 2018-19 brings their total to 18 conference tournament titles in program history, with the first 17 coming as members of the Big South Conference. This marks the first time the Liberty has ended their season with a victory, their eighth win in a row, matching a streak that culminated in the 2018 Big South Conference Championship final that clinched a 16th NCAA Tournament bid.

The win over Kennessaw State was the Lady Flames’ final game at the Vines Center before renovations started this spring. They are scheduled to begin play in their new home, the Liberty Arena, next season.

Head Coach Carey Green improved to 51-6 coaching in conference tournament games and brought his win total to 476 games over his 21-year career with the Lady Flames.
