The Journey radio station listeners donate nearly 900 items for Virginia pregnancy centers

Listeners of the Liberty University-owned radio station The Journey donated more than 880 items to pregnancy centers around the Commonwealth last month as part of the station’s annual “World’s Largest Baby Shower” campaign, supporting young families’ needs in a tangible way.

“The great thing about these fundraisers, which we call our ‘community projects,’ is that we get to be a vehicle that connects these listeners to organizations and ministries,” general manager Mark Edwards said. “Outside of the support they give to The Journey, it’s a way for them to support other organizations and be a part of something that they might not have been aware of before.”

The campaign lasted from Jan. 15 to Feb. 14. The donations were made by purchasing items listed on different organizations’ registries, located on the station’s website and My Journey FM mobile app, which included baby clothes, diapers, blankets, bottles, and other related items. Gifts came in from listeners of The Journey’s 14 cities in Virginia as well as five other states, including California, North Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, and Colorado. The organizations were the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center (Lynchburg), Blue Ridge Women’s Center (Roanoke), Lifespring Pregnancy Center (Charlottesville), The Keim Centers (Tidewater), Pregnancy Help Center (Chesterfield), or the The Pregnancy Resource Center of Metro Richmond. The fundraiser has been a part of The Journey since 2017, originally for only the BRPC before adding on the other organizations more recently.

“We had done it with Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center for several years, and then one of our staff members made the suggestion that, since we have locations around Virginia and some in North Carolina, it made sense to include pregnancy centers in those areas and give those listeners an opportunity to participate in this as well,” Edwards said.

Jane Oliver, executive director of the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center, said they were thrilled with the response to help new parents.

“We can help moms and dads choose life for their babies by helping them with some material items.”

The Journey’s next fundraiser will be April 16-19 with its Partner Invitation, the station’s annual effort to raise funds for the station’s operations.

The Journey flagship station is located in Candlers Station Shopping Center in Lynchburg, where it is heard on 88.3 as well as 12 additional stations in Virginia and five in North Carolina (visit the station website for a full list of stations). Besides airing contemporary Christian music, the station also broadcasts Flames Football games, a daily Flames Minute athletics news segment, and promotional spots for Liberty’s football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball teams.
