Liberty trustee remembered for his dedication to the Christian mission

Liberty University is mourning the loss of longtime Board of Trustees member Harvey Gainey, who died on Sunday, Nov. 28, at age 79.

Gainey, a businessman from Grand Haven, Mich., served on Liberty’s board for 26 years. For the last six years, he faithfully served as Chairman of the Executive Committee, a role he held at the time of his passing. Gainey first joined the board in 1994. He was elected Vice Chairman in 1996 and served as Chairman from September 1999 to 2003 before again serving as Vice Chairman through 2013.

“Liberty University has lost a loyal friend and supporter who truly believed in our mission here,” said President Jerry Prevo. “Harvey Gainey played a vital leadership role during a period of tremendous growth at Liberty and, most importantly, in his role as a servant for the Kingdom throughout his life. On behalf of the Liberty family, I extend our condolences to the Gainey family and ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers.”

“We are all indebted to Harvey’s strong leadership as Chairman of the Executive Committee since 2016,” said Current Chairman of the Board Tim Lee. “He used his long experience at Liberty and leveraged his background on other college boards to help steer us through one of the most challenging seasons in our institution’s history. As much as anyone else, he helped set Liberty on a healthy course for a bright future. God knew we needed Harvey Gainey. He was a gift to Liberty University.”

In his obituary, Gainey was recognized as a successful businessman, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. He owned and operated Gainey Corporation and was also an owner with the West Michigan Whitecaps and Northpointe Bank. Gainey founded Two Moose Camp at Gainey Ranch in Glen, Mont., a Christian camp dedicated for leadership training.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at Calvary Church in Grand Rapids, where Gainey was a member.
