Field hockey makes Liberty Athletics history with No. 5 national ranking

The Lady Flames Field Hockey team is now the highest ranking NCAA Division I sports team in school history.

The Liberty University field hockey team has made school history as the first top-five program in any Liberty Athletics sport at the NCAA Division I level.

Liberty (8-1, 7-1 BIG EAST) garnered a No. 5 national ranking in Tuesday’s first Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll of the season. This is the highest national ranking in program history. The Lady Flames’ previous best ranking was No. 8 on Oct. 13, 2015.

Prior to Liberty cracking the top five, the men’s indoor track & field team held the highest national ranking in Liberty Athletics history as the seventh-ranked team in the country on Jan. 30, 2008.

Liberty is one spot ahead of No. 6 Connecticut (4-1, 3-1 BIG EAST) after the two teams split a pair of games last weekend at Temple’s Howarth Field in Philadelphia, Pa. UConn defeated Liberty 3-2 on Saturday, but the Lady Flames bounced back with a 4-0 shutout of the eight-time defending BIG EAST champion Huskies. The win marked Liberty’s first-ever victory over UConn and the Huskies’ first loss in conference play since 2013.

Liberty (No. 5), UConn (No. 6) and Old Dominion (No. 17) are the BIG EAST’s three ranked teams in the first poll. Two-time defending national champion North Carolina (12-1) holds the No. 1 spot in the rankings. This spring’s weekly national poll will feature the top 20 teams in the country rather than the top 25 schools.

No. 5 Liberty shifts its focus to a top-20 showdown at No. 12 Duke (3-7) on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
