New campus facilities take shape; Liberty Arena, parking garage on schedule to open this fall

Just across U.S. 460 from main campus, construction cranes have been lifting concrete walls into place and bringing Liberty University’s new parking garage into view. The construction of the foundation and underground portions that began in August 2019 has moved to the next phase, creating the walls and floors that are now framing the nine-story facility. When completed this fall, the new garage will provide parking for 2,000 vehicles.

The new garage will also benefit fans who attend events in the new Liberty Arena. Thanks to four high-speed elevators, fans who park in the garage will have direct access to the new arena.

“When you are in the parking garage, you get in the elevator, push a button and you are taken down to the pedestrian tunnel that goes under U.S. 460,” said Dan Deter, vice president of major construction. “You don’t have to go down the ramp or the stairs, you just walk right through that tunnel and you are at the new Liberty Arena.”

Home to Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and women’s volleyball, the new arena is currently under construction and is also scheduled to open in Fall 2020.

Deter said the 115,000-square-foot arena, situated between DeMoss Hall and the Vines Center, will seat 4,000 fans and improve the fan experience for events that are better suited to a smaller space.

“The walls are being built, you can see where the seats are going to go, and we are close to pouring the floor,” he said. “The new arena is really taking shape.”
