Scaremare prepares to bring more thrills this season

Liberty University’s Scaremare enters its 46th year this week, confronting guests with the age-old question, “What happens after I die?”

What was once a small youth outreach has developed into a prominent Lynchburg horror attraction, known not only for its spectacular spooks but its unique message of hope.

Boasting more than 28,000 visitors each season, Scaremare is Central Virginia’s largest Halloween attraction. Guests weave through 45 minutes of frights and thrills on creepy trails, dark woods, and inside the “House of Horror.” Afterward, visitors are presented with the answer to their questions of mortality with a life-changing message.

In the early days, the event took place in a small barn not far outside of Lynchburg. Over time, the attraction grew increasingly popular and was relocated in 1989 to an old cotton mill near Downtown Lynchburg, and has expanded over the years to two buildings as well as parts of the surrounding wooded area.

More than 900 Liberty students volunteer each year to be part of the cast, while preparations for Scaremare take place throughout the year to make it a thrilling experience for guests from all over. Groups regularly make the long trek from up and down the East Coast.

Scaremare opens this Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. and continues on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights through Oct. 27. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased at the gate. Groups of 15+ must pre-register online or by calling (434) 582-7328 in order to secure a rate of $8 per person. Groups must be pre-registered at least 24 hours in advance.
