LU Send Now team headed to Mexico following deadly earthquake

Liberty University’s disaster relief initiative LU Send Now will be sending a team of 10 students and two staff to Morelos, Mexico, on Saturday, Sept. 30, and return Oct. 7. This will be the third trip for LU Send Now this semester, following hurricane relief efforts in Texas and the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

Central Mexico suffered a devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake last week that killed more than 300 people and left thousands homeless.

LU Send Now partnered with The Rawlings Foundation and Impact Youth Worldwide for the Mexico trip. The group will be staying at Camp Tierra Alta, which is currently hosting teams for disaster relief, along with residents who are displaced. While there, Liberty’s team will be distributing food, removing debris, and sharing the Gospel with the recently devastated community.

The Mexico team will be led by LU Shepherds Carla Nava and Wes Franklin. Originally from Morelos, Nava is looking forward to seeing her friends and family there.

“I hope the team will be a tangible representation of the love of Jesus and a reminder that He is with them in the midst of devastation,” Nava said.

Liberty junior and LU Send Now team member Ian Prince said he is more than willing to leave the comforts of Lynchburg to embrace a new culture and serve people in need.

“This is an opportunity to change the lives of others in physical ways through disaster relief and in spiritual ways by living out Christ’s work of salvation,” Prince said.

The LU Send Now team in Antigua and Barbuda will return on Sunday after serving a week with Samaritan’s Purse International relief teams following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma throughout much of the Caribbean. Earlier this month, a team of 10 students and two staff members were dispatched to Victoria, Texas, to help residents affected by Hurricane Harvey.
