Liberty University student William Byron is now the youngest NASCAR driver to win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the Xfinity Series rookie phenom raced to his third win of the season on Saturday. The win came only weeks after the 19-year-old claimed back-to-back victories at Iowa Speedway and Daytona International Speedway, also making history at the former as its youngest winner.
Saturday afternoon at Indy, Byron, driving his Liberty-sponsored No. 9 Camaro, found himself in a duel with Paul Menard in the closing laps, according to NBC Sports. Still, the rookie maintained the lead for the final 16 laps. He won the race by the narrowest margin in its history — 0.108 seconds.
His win in Iowa clinched Byron a spot in the NXS playoffs.
Byron is in his rookie season with JR Motorsports (JRM) on the Xfinity Series. Liberty is his primary sponsor for several races in the series. View the full schedule and follow Byron’s progress at WilliamByron.com.
Last season, Byron was named Rookie of the Year after winning a rookie-record seven races and helping to clinch the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Owners’ Championship for Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) and crew chief Rudy Fugle.
