Lynchburg named ‘third most Bible-minded city’ in U.S.

The American Bible Society recently ranked Lynchburg, Va., home to Liberty University, as the third most Bible-minded city in the U.S. The community is saturated in biblical teaching and opportunities to serve, with approximately 250 churches and more than 1,000 nonprofits in the area.

One of the most influential contributors to Lynchburg’s biblically-centered culture is Liberty, the world’s largest Christian university. Since 1971, Liberty’s mission has been to develop Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential for impacting tomorrow’s world. With a unique heritage and an ever-expanding influence, Liberty remains steadfast in its commitment of Training Champions for Christ.

Liberty students regularly hear from prominent speakers from every sphere of society — including some of the most popular Christian leaders — on a regular basis during Convocation, the largest weekly gathering of Christian young people in North America. The university holds Spiritual Emphasis Week and Global Focus Week each semester.

Liberty strives to immerse its students in the Lynchburg community, giving them the opportunity to serve and fulfill their mandatory Center for Christian/Community Service (CSER) hours. Many students choose to go above and beyond this and participate in the Community Care Initiative, an optional supplement to CSER in which students reach out to meet the short-term, immediate needs of the community.

The university’s Office of Student Leadership (OSL) gives student leaders the opportunity to minister to every residential student at Liberty. Residential students meet together for small-group Bible studies and prayer on a weekly basis, creating a Gospel-centered foundation for the Liberty community. Online students are also given numerous opportunities for spiritual community and development through Online Communities.

Roy J. Peterson, the new president of the American Bible Society, will be addressing the Liberty student body in Convocation during the Fall 2014 Semester. Peterson has served as president and CEO of both The Seed Company and of Wycliffe Bible Translators.
