UPDATE: Due to inclement weather forcasted for Friday, Feb. 22, the Flames home opener against Penn State has been rescheduled to Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The new stadium will be christened during this game. On Sunday, Feb. 24, the Flames will continue the series against the Nittany Lions with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Construction workers are bustling about the site of Liberty University’s new baseball stadium, which is on schedule to accommodate fans for the Flames’ home opener against Penn State on Feb. 22.
Roofing and bricklaying has begun and is progressing rapidly. Turf is being laid on the playing field and seats are going to be installed soon. The stadium will have 2,500 chairback seats and include luxury boxes and a state-of-the-art press area. A new video scoreboard has been positioned overlooking the playing field.
The stadium will be top-notch, with the latest amenities to rival any collegiate stadium in the country, said Jeff Barber, Flames director of athletics. The design of the stadium has been influenced by several stadiums Barber has visited over the years, including those at the University of Virginia and the University of South Carolina.
“When our fans come to the game, when our students come, our season ticket holders, and parents, and … recruits come to our baseball stadium they are going to know that Liberty University cares a great deal about baseball and about providing the best possible experience,” Barber recently told LibertyFlames.com.
When the Flames take the field in February, the stadium will be safe and functional with all the necessary parts in place. Painting and interior construction on locker rooms and the concourse area will continue.
The Flames home schedule includes three-game series with West Virginia, Winthrop, and Radford, along with midweek visits from Duke, Maryland, Virginia, James Madison, and William & Mary. Liberty will get to showcase its new stadium on a large scale as it hosts the 2013 Big South Championship Tournament May 21-25. For the full schedule, visit www.Liberty.edu/Flames.
