Aeronautics dean named to state board

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Dave Young, dean of the Liberty University School of Aeronautics, was recently appointed by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell to serve on the Virginia Aviation Board.

Young will represent Region 5, which covers the City of Lynchburg, as well as Campbell, Appomattox, Pittsylvania, Nottoway, Prince Edward, and Halifax counties. Board members serve four-year terms.

The Board provides a means of citizen access to the Virginia Department of Aviation by publicizing and monitoring its policies and programs, announcing the regulations necessary to promote aviation safety and allocating funds to localities for aviation development, according to the Department of Aviation website.

“Governor McDonnell believes that Mr. Young will be a great addition to the Virginia Aviation Board because of his career as a Brigadier General in the United States Air Force and his extensive background in aeronautics,” said Taylor Michals, a press office representative for the governor’s office.

Young said he is grateful for the honor.

“Having been involved in military and general aviation for over 45 years, I am looking forward to serving in a new capacity,” he said. “I trust that my experience and knowledge will allow me to contribute to furthering aviation in the Commonwealth of Virginia.”

Young served as Liberty’s executive vice president and chief operating officer before joining the aviation program in 2002. He previously served on the Lynchburg Regional Airport Commission and was named Virginia Aviation Person of the Year in 2008.
