Alumni tailgating event benefits Humane Society

About 350 Liberty University alumni gathered outside Worthington Stadium Friday night for food and fellowship, and to support the Lynchburg Humane Society.

The event, put on by the local Liberty University 245 Alumni Chapter, featured a catered barbecue dinner before the baseball game against Coastal Carolina. The meal was offered free of charge for those who made a monetary donation or donated pet supplies, such as dog or cat food, to benefit the Humane Society. More than 100 items were donated.

“One of our office mottos is ‘Keeping the Liberty Experience Alive’ and that can be done several ways, one of them is through community outreach,” said Tyler Falwell, Director of Alumni Relations. “We all know the impact that our students’ Christian service hours have on individuals in our community every year, and our department is serious about keeping the experience alive for our alumni as well. We hope to be able to extend these volunteering opportunities not only to alumni in the 245 (zip code) area but to alumni all across Flames Nation.”

Falwell said other than Homecoming, Friday’s event was the largest one the Alumni Relations Office has sponsored.

The Liberty University Alumni Relations Office will be volunteering at PetSmart on Wards Road from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 4.

Falwell said it is the first of many opportunities for the Liberty University Alumni Relations Office to give back to the Lynchburg community, and hopefully will be expanded to allow alumni to volunteer as well.
