Liberty University Online hits 60,000 students

A milestone was reached today at Liberty University Online – 60,000 students are currently enrolled in online courses.

“This is a historic event for Liberty University Online, Enrollment Management, and Liberty University,” said Chris Johnson, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “We want to give thanks to the Lord for making this accomplishment possible. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Chancellor for his leadership and vision, the entire LUO staff, and all of the support offices for their efforts in helping us reach this goal.”

Launched in 1985 and originally called the Liberty University School of Lifelong Learning, Liberty University Online reached 25,000 students by 2008. It hit the 50,000-mark in April 2010.

When Liberty opened its doors in September 1971, enrollment was 154 students. There were more than 2,000 students in 1977, nearly 6,000 by 1985, and now there are 12,000 residential students.

Liberty University is the nation’s eighth-largest, four-year university, the largest private four-year, non-profit university in the United States and the world’s largest Christian university.
