Crews were busy removing mounds of dirt from a hillside on Liberty University’s Ivy Lake this week to create a new 6,000-square-foot beach.
The area will be covered in white sand and should be completed in about three weeks.
LU Auxiliary Services is also building a 40-foot dock addition and there are plans to build a shelter to store the boats piloted by the university’s men’s and women’s crew teams.
Ivy Lake, located about 25 minutes from Liberty’s campus in Forest, Va., spans 112 acres. It is available for a variety of activities for Liberty University students, faculty and staff, including fishing, canoeing and picnicking. LU’s Biology department also uses the lake for research and other projects.
Liberty received Ivy Lake as a gift last year from Lynchburg-area residents Tom DeWitt (an LU alumnus), Terry Dobyns and Richard Chaffin. The donation includes a small park-like area with a concrete boat ramp, gazebo, dock and plenty of green space for recreation.
