New York Times bestselling author and radio host Eric Metaxas spoke at Convocation Oct. 7 in the Vines Center to remind students about the freedom they have.
Metaxas said many Americans do not know or have forgotten how the United States became a nation. He emphasized the importance of knowing the history of the individuals who created it.
Metaxas also talked about the significance of keeping God at the center of the American government and the history of the United States.
“Christian faith is inescapably at the center of the birth of this nation,” Metaxas said.
Metaxas also mentioned that citizens are only free by the grace of God.
“The only way people can govern themselves and be free, is to be free under God,” Metaxas said.
Metaxas discussed the story of George Washington, recognizing that without the help of God, America would have lost the Revolutionary War.
“That is called faith,” Metaxas said. “To actually fight in a way that says, ‘God is real, and without him, we cannot win.’”

Metaxas urged students to trust in God by the way they live.
“If the church in America is not being the Church … we will lose the liberties that we have,” Metaxas said.
Junior Nikolas Lee enjoyed hearing about the biblical foundation of the United States.
“It is so important for Convo speakers to share the importance of our heritage,” Lee said. “We are at Liberty University, we should know about liberty and how it was born and the importance of Christianity in our freedoms.”
Metaxas told students that the Lord is with America.
“The God who delivered the Israelites in Sinai … is with us in this nation. That God wants to use us to point the whole world to him,” Metaxas said.
Freshman Sophia Bains admired Metaxas’ passion and enthusiasm.
“I love history, and tying that together with Christianity is so cool to see,” Bains said.
