From The Whiteboard: A Reflection On Flames Sports

Looking back on the last academic year, there are far too many blessings to count. Liberty University athletics had another incredible year, and I got to experience it in a unique way as the sports editor for the Champion.

Going from sitting in the stands as a fan to becoming a volunteer writer and now having the privilege of working my favorite sports on a regular basis has been an unexpected but incredible experience. Now that I have a year of experience under my belt and have (kind of) gotten the hang of things, this week’s column is going to be about my favorite events I have covered this year.

Is it football season yet?

Sitting in the press box at Williams Stadium is an experience I wish everyone who attended Liberty could have. Unfortunately, I do not have enough press passes to go around, so you are going to have to settle for me describing it.

The press box is a magical land where you can look down on everyone and experience extreme FOMO because you are not allowed to cheer. Glitter face paint is also frowned upon, so I had to scale back on my usual gameday attire. However, from a professional standpoint, you cannot get a better seat in the house.

Absolute Madness

There was absolutely no way I could end this column without talking about March Madness. If you keep up with the Whiteboard, you know how much that experience meant to me, but for the new people — it was sick.

Getting to cover the Flames in their first-round appearance of the NCAA Tournament was my favorite thing that I have ever done in my young career as a sports journalist. And to tell you the truth, I think it is going to be pretty hard to beat.

What a year it’s been!

As I reminisce on the year, I am reminded yet again how blessed I am for these opportunities. I have already done so many things that would make my younger self proud, and that alone is an accomplishment.

To think, if I have received this many opportunities in just one year, there is no telling what the next one holds. Thank you to everyone who has spent their time reading my words over the last year. Stick with me, because I promise we can only go up from here!
